The Bahía culture

The Bahia culture was a population that stood out for its advanced navigation techniques. It was characterized by an abundant production of ceramic figurines of great importance for the Ecuadorian culture.

HANDICRAFTS

was recognized for its modeled ceramics, among which are representations of temples that, in its interior, had a human figure.

They used to make crafts in the form of cradles, animals, musical instruments and even personal ornaments (such as ear muffs or nose rings).

 

- LOCATION

The Bahia culture developed mainly in the center and south of the current province of Manabi.

 

- POPULATION

The Bahia culture belonged to the pre-Columbian era and its development took place during the Regional Period, covering exactly the years 500 BC to 650 AD.

The society was gathered in planned communities. It is even believed that a single locality could have had more than 5,000 inhabitants

 

The people of this population was dedicated to the planting and cultivation of food, but in turn, based its economy on marine resources. They built small boats for transportation, fishing and exploration.

This even allowed for long distance maritime exchange, which led to the creation of important ports such as Jaramijó, Manta, Puerto Cayo, Puerto López and Bahía de Caráquez.

They had the custom of self-plasmating and thus representing themselves in a complete form.

In the cult - important ritual, which is believed to have been an offering to the sun, different ceramic vessels of various sizes with representations of the sun were used.
